For the editors at Car and Driver, road testing a 1971 C3 Corvette was about as good as it got. With Zora Arkus-Duntov—Corvette’s legendary Chief Engineer—openly courted the automotive press. Journalists were then given rare access to a car built by true enthusiasts, for true enthusiasts. The result was a revealing, no-holds-barred road test that captured the Corvette at a pivotal moment in performance history.

By 1971, General Motors was beginning to re-engineer its engines to meet new EPA emissions regulations, starting with the industry-wide shift to unleaded gasoline. Early gasoline—once little more than a refinery byproduct—had extremely low octane ratings, making it prone to pre-detonation and unusable for modern engines until chemical solutions emerged.

GM engineers solved that problem decades earlier by adding tetraethyl lead, dramatically increasing octane and enabling high-compression performance engines. The downside was toxicity. Removing lead meant lowering compression ratios—barely noticeable in everyday cars, but a serious setback for high-performance machines like the Corvette.

Gross Horsepower versus Net Horsepower

For instance, the 1970 350 Corvette small-block performance LT-1 engine was rated at 370 (gross) horsepower. For 1971, the same LT-1 with lower compression was rated at 330 (net) horsepower. The 1970 454 big-block LS5 engine was rated at 390 (gross) horsepower. The 1971 Corvette with the same engine, with reduced compression, was rated at 365 (net) horsepower. This wasn’t a huge reduction, but it was the beginning of the downward spiral for high-performance cars.

Published road test comparisons were tricky because there were so many variables. How many options are on the cars, automatic or manual transmissions,  and rear axle ratios? So, for 1971, performance was off from 1969-1970 levels, just a little. Performance fans had no idea how bad things would get.

C3 Corvette performance option makes a big difference in market value

Many of Corvette Magazine’s “ADD” option premiums seem low to me. How much these old performance cars sell for also depends on how many cars were built with the various premium options. In 1969, only 116, 427 L88 Corvettes were built, making them some of the most valuable Corvettes today. That same year, 2,722 427/435 L71 Corvettes were built. L71s are beasts, but with 2,722 made, they’re not as valuable as L88s. In 1970, only 1,287 350 LT1 Corvettes were built, so they command a $10,000 premium.

Zora Arkus-Duntov Corvette Chief Engineer.Performance by the horsepower numbers took another big hit in 1972 when GM switched to “Net” horsepower ratings. The new numbers were closer to the actual, under-the-hood numbers. Engines with “gross” power numbers were dynoed without a full exhaust system, cool air intake, no fan, and no power accessories, such as power steering and air conditioning.

On paper, 1972 looked like a bloodbath for regular Corvettes.
