I happened upon this interesting issue of Motor Trend from the May 1992 issue. The cover feature story is “TOP SECRET CHEVYS!” Sounds juicy, doesn’t it? It is! Four engineering study Corvettes were featured. All I can say is that a few small groups of Chevy engineers were having WAY too much fun!

The issue highlights three jaw-dropping experimental Corvettes. The ZR-12, “Conan the Corvette,” had its front end stretched to accommodate the all-aluminum V-12 Falconer aircraft engine!

Snake Skinner” was one of John Heinricy’s pet C4 “Lightweight” ZR-1 Corvettes. One version that was auctioned off a few years ago was lightened to around 2,900 pounds. The Snake Skinner Corvettes are very interesting machines.

This is arguably the last hurrah effort to bring back the big-block Corvette with an electronic fuel injection 454. Now there’s something worth bench racing over!

Chevrolet used to give the automotive press a little “sneak peek” outing where they show, just a little, of their cards. Little whiffs of what’s in their engineering pipe. Whatever they were smoking, it was some good sh-t! Don’t Bogart that story, pass it around, Man! Enjoy this blast from the past, 33 years ago! – Scott
