It's the seats, Steve. LOL. Honestly, I was going to do a post asking, "why the press has turned on the Corvette?" I know they've always loved to bash the Vette, and probably always will, no matter what. "If it's not made by one of the sacred cows of Europe or by Lexus, it's junk." seems to be the attitude. Even if they did compare the 911 to the ZR1, they're still bitch about the seats, the squeaks, trim, and misc "unrefined" sounds the Corvette makes. The price spread on the two cars was like that nasty thing in the punch bowl. "Excuse me, but there's something FLOATING IN THE PUNCH BOWL!!!" For too many automotive writers, the Corvette's ultimate sin it that it's MADE IN AMERICA. So, for them, go ahead and spend almost DOUBLE.

Totally UNFAIR! The 911 as shown, is no where near in the same class. WHy didn't they just compare a VW Beetle to a Gallardo? It's obvious this BRITT is prejudicial when it comes to Corvette. Why didn't they take a ZR1 in the SAME PRICE RANGE and thrash the 911? The only thing this "contest" comparison had in common was they both have TWO SEATS! That's it. Nothing else is even close. And I have a strong suspicion that there is a REASON there were no numbers for comparison.... A BASE C6 would probably give the 911 a run for the money. I"m not saying this just because I'm a Vette fan.. I've owned 911s in Europe, and drove them on the Autobahn... As well as Corvettes on the Autobahn as well. Although 911 would stick to the road better at 150... that's about as far as it would go! The Vette would lift the front end at 120, but with an airdam up front, 150 was where it started to get fun, and 180 was where I had to let off due to traffic.
For a "FIRST EDITION" program, then pretty much screwed the pooch when it comes to "FAIR" play. Why would I want to see any future editions when the first one was so slanted??

Hi Doug! It certainly is "Dave MacDonald Month" in the world of Corvette magazines. Here's a question for you and our readers. I saw that the 1961 Gulf One Corvette race car was a No Sale at last month's Mecum Kissimmee Auction. The bidding stalled at $850,000, but did not meet the undisclosed Seller's Reserve. Here's a link to the story...

http://www.corvetteblogger.com/2012/01/30/1961-corvette-gulf-oil-race-car-a-no-sale-at-mecums-2012-kissimmee-auction/

And that got me to wondering. Are any of your brother's C1 Corvette race cars with the Don Steves livery still around? I know that 1963 Z06 Corvette #1 that Dave and Sherry picked up at the St. Louis factory has been beautifully restored and is featured in Randy Leffingwell and Dave Wendt's book "Legendary Corvettes."

Thanks for all your support, my friend! - Scott

My older brother started racing cars back in the late 50's and bought a new 55' Corvette with a V8, drag raced it, then bought a 58, raced it then decided to go road racing in 1960, bought a 57, started racing it and winning, bought a 61, then a 62, then, when I was 16, he brought home the 1st 63 Z06 produced ! that car HOOKED me as a Vette lover.. WOW, what a car it was at the time! .....see pictures of some of these and a Story by Scott Teeters on here of my late brothers cars!! I now have a 07" Z06. LOVE THIS CAR, but, would still like to have the 63 Z06 next to it!!

Hi Steve,
 What I created here...

http://www.illustratedcorvetteseries.com/images/ICS_160_C7_Sting_Ray.jpg

Was a variant of the Corvette Stingray Concept Car, aka, The Transformers Corvette, seen here...

http://www.illustratedcorvetteseries.com/images/ICS-II_170_Stingray_Concept.jpg

My version keeps the basic size and proportion of the real concept car, minus the front and rear gills and a few other things. Corvette designer, Tom Peters explained that his concept car was an outlet for his design team to try out a few ideas in 3D and has NO CHANCE of ever being a production Corvette. In other words, it's NOT the C7.

I think that making a custom body version of what I've drawn would be a real challenge, unless you have the ability to make a unique windshield. A C6 production windshield is shaped differently from what I have rendered. If a C6 structure was used, the styling would have to be adjusted to the shape and height of the production glass. So the final result would look "similar" but different from the ultra-low, swept back version I created. But, it would be an interesting design study.

We'll talk. - Scott

Had a motor like that in my Vette on the Autobahn in Europe. I was having problems getting it to start once. Eventually found wires inside distributor were broken, but INSIDE the insulation so you could not see the copper broken. The car TRIED to start... would buck, snort, then die. Then it would "DIESEL"... attempting to run, cycle through about three iterations of the equivalent of a dying elephant.... then hiss, steam, and stop running... I worked on it for days. DAYS. And still could not get it to run. Then an old timer, Chief Warrant Officer who had been flying helicopters for years, took me to the side and said, "Ya know! I had a tractor that sounded just like that when I was a kid". I thought he was busting my chops.. then he grinned and said, "427 with 12.5 to 1 pistons, sounds to me like you are firing on compression alone!" SO, I went and got some AVIATION fuel...and then it wouldn't start at all. In reality, the octane increase simply ceased the pre=detonation that was occurring from compression alone. It truly WAS imitating a DIESEL.... on compression alone. The longer I worked on it, the hotter it got, the more it wanted to run. With the higher octane, it just plain would not try to start. Which made me look for the REAL PROBLEM...which I eventually found. Broken wires. No idea how that happened, but it taught me a MEMORABLE LESSON on what 12.5 to 1 really meant. Once I put new points in the distributor, and fixed the wires, it started up like a champ. Which immediately got a response from the local Germans who promptly called the Polizei (german Police) complaining that the ARMY had a new tank that was making their windows rattle. I eventually had to put mufflers on, in place of the side pipes until I shipped it back to the U.S. Really glad I did not snap a connecting rod, or damage the bearings or crankshaft while trying to make it run with broken wires. And my sincere thanks to this day, to the Chief Warrant Officer who inspired me to leave the ranks of Enlisted Soldiers and follow his foot steps. (Not Aviation though) Anyone with that much insight, knowledge and drive to be an absolute expert in his field, and was willing to let some of it rub off on me, couldn't be all that bad. I did eventually get it on the Autobahn.....and learned the incredible feeling of that bumper sticker I always had on my bumper: "Life begins at 150mph!"... man.. I miss the Autobahn!

Scott, I sent you an email back to "CorvetteReport" and forgot about this link.
In case you didn't get it right away, I wrote to you ref doing some artwork for me with the upcoming Mako Prototype (yet to be named correctly) and the future Hammerhead Shark series.
I was checking out the rest of your artwork... saw the C7 version you penned. AWESOME! ANy ideas of doing this FOR REAL, in REAL FIBERGLASS, put on a C5 chassis???? If GM is not going to do it, I WILL! Let me know. It's a GREAT DESIGN, and could be accomplished pretty easily with the techniques I am using to produce Glass... then put it onto a C5/6 chassis. WOuld be great with twin turbo, or even a Paxton supercharger on a LS7? What you think?

Wow! That's a lot of tooling around in your Corvette. You obviously took Mr. Duntov's instructions to Corvette owners to, "enjoy their Corvette!" Would you like to share some pics? - Scott

Hi Steven,
 This isn't a Maco, but it's close...

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c3-general/2910762-1972-baldwin-motion-corvette.html

I also write for Vette Vues magazine and did a story about Dave Ankenbauer's mind-numbing 1972 454 Phase III Corvette. Ankenbauer was parapalegic and drove the beast with HAND CONTROLS!!! Dave was quite a guy! When the story comes out I'll run it here at CorvetteReport. - Scott

Hi Ron. Which Maco are you referring to? There are two different looking Macos under your name Ron, are they the same Maco or two different cars? Be sure to visit our sister blog, http://www.BaldwinMotionReport.com.- Scott

Happy to help, Steven. I started to get back into the Motion and Maco cars a few years ago. I got out my old Motion catalog and CARS Magazines, which I hadn't looked at in years and realized, yea, they were THAT COOL! Back in '08 when my Illustrated Corvette Series finally caught up with the then production Corvette (I was doing the series in chronological order) I then started to go back and focus on a lot of the specialty Corvettes that I had missed. Joel Rosen and Marty Schorr are almost in their 80s now, so it's up to us to keep the Motion/Maco out there for the younger Corvette fans to know about. I want them to know that there were lots of jaw-dropping machines that can still make your head spin. Yea, it was THAT COOL!

Looking forward to updates on your projects. - Scott
