You can own a piece of Corvette racing history
UPDATE: On November 4, 2025, the Bosch Corvette Challenge race car sold for $38,500. Considering the car’s originality and pedigree, the sale is considered “Well Bought”.
I covered this unique Corvette in the April 2023 issue of Vette Vues Magazine.
This car is for sale on www.BringATrailer.com, details HERE.
The 1988-1989 Corvette Challenge Series was an outgrowth of the 1985-1987 SCCA Showroom Stock Series. What happened was that the C4 Corvettes won every race! The joke in the pits was, “Who will get 2nd and 3rd place?” Imagine that, kicked out for being too fast! In fact, Porsche even bought a C4 Corvette to take apart to learn why the Corvettes were so fast.
All Corvette Challenges originally rolled off the Bowling Green Line
The 1988-1989 Corvette cars all originally rolled off the Bowling Green assembly line, just like any other 1988-1989 Corvette. Consequently, when customers ordered a Corvette Challenge Corvette, every car had the same package of options. But instead of the cars being transported to dealerships for delivery, the cars were sent to Protofab in Wixom, Michigan, for racecar preparation.
Additionally, all of the L98 350 engines were blueprinted to exact specs and dyno tested so that every engine produced the same amount of horsepower. Special green seals were painted over bolts. If the engines were opened up and modified, the official seals would be broken, indicating tampering. The car’s exhaust catalytic converters were removed, and true dual exhaust was installed. Every car has a full race spec roll cage, suspension mods, Dymag wheels, and racing tires.
Aside from track prep, the Corvette Challenge cars were turnkey and track-ready.
After the Corvette Challenge Series was over at the end of the 1989 season, in true raced fashion, the cars were sold. Racers tend to be “racers”, not “collectors. Dan Barr, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was a fan of the series and bought the No. 9 Bosch car and raced it off-and-on for the next 35 years.
Dan recently decided it was time to let someone else enjoy the car
George Haddad, owner of Fabulous Restorations in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, performed the restoration in 2025. The car is now available on www.BringATrailer.com. Check out the details and tons of photos of the car, HERE.
